Lads and Horse, Bradford, 2012

I saw a news item about horses being left tethered around Holme Wood, a Bradford housing estate, so I went to have a look. There were three or four horses tethered on a bit of park; I was hanging around with my camera when some lads came to tend them. I didn’t know what sort of response I’d get but I got talking to them and they were happy to pose for some photos. This shot has remained one of my favourite photos – possibly the favourite. I like that the boys posed, but show no self-consciousness. Someone suggested that I crop the photo but I like what the background tells you – that we’re clearly on a(n) (ex-)council estate somewhere: the type of place I didn’t exactly grow up in, but certainly knew well.
