I’m a dog lover and a whippet lover and I’m from Newcastle, so how come I’d never photographed whippet racing? I have no answer to that. However, in June this year (2026) I attended Pontefract Racecourse on a baking Midsummer’s Day and had a fantastic time drooling over the dogs, and photographing them. Here is a selection of my photographs. This was my first time photographing whippet racing, but it won’t be my last! Today, Pontefract; tomorrow, Wallsend!
(Technical note: all shots on Ilford Film, HP5 and FP4. Taken in either a Nikon F or an Olympus OM2n. The Nikon F shots were metered with a Sekonic Twinmate L208. I know that’s all very boring but I bloody love that lightmeter.)
